Luxor
was once the capital of Egypt in Pharaonic times, then known
as Thebes. It has two specific areas divided by the
magnificent River Nile.
The East Bank
accomodates most of the major hotels including the very
impressive Old Winter Palace, built in the late 1,800.
Here this hotel the famous Howard Carter would meet his
sponsor, Lord Caernarvon.
Agatha Christie is
said to have been inspired to write ''Death'' on the Nile''
whilst staying there.
The vast Karnak
temple site and Luxor temple are situated on the East Bank
as is Luxor's small but excellent Museum.
Across the Nile on
the West Bank is the resting place of the Pharaohs, Valley
of the Kings. This site in itself has many many tombs,
including the one known by all, Tutankhamun, the ''boy
king'' Not all tombs are open at one time, openings are
rotated in an effort to protect them, so that generations to
come can still admire their beauty and the skills taken to
build them.
Also on the West
Bank, you can visit the following
sights.............................
Valley of Queens
Valley of Nobles
Valley of Workers
Hatshepsut's temple
Ramesseum
Medinat Habu
The atmosphere of
the West Bank is much more tranquil and less hectic compared
to the city life of the East several smaller hotels are
situated here.
